3,560 foot mountain cafe opens

The highest cafe in the UK has reopened - at the top of Mount Snowdon.

The cafe offers stunning views from the 3,560 foot mountain peak, and is the centrepiece of an £8m visitor centre.

Welsh First Minister Rhodri Morgan is set to officially open the building, known as Hafod Eryri.

Designed by architect Ray Hole, it offers views from a “window on the world” wall of glass. The granite structure is designed to withstand the extreme weather conditions which the mountain is famous for.

High winds, heavy rain and deep snow meant that the opening of the centre was delayed from last year, with more than 70 construction days being lost.

Tegwyn Williams, site manager for contractors Carillion told BBC News: “More than once I’ve thought we’d never get here.

“We’ve had days when we could not get here. But it’s good to see it finished and it looks good.”

As well as a cafe there is also a shop area, toilets, a lift for the disabled, while the building can also be used as an education centre.

The former summit building was built in 1935 and designed by architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis.
