Balfour aims to build on success

The largest building firm in the UK hopes its market position will help it progress this year despite the recession.

Balfour - which recently celebrated its centenary and joined the FTSE - hopes its broad geographical and business spread will protect it from the worst of the economic downturn.

The company also benefited when a £400 million project on the A46 in Nottinghamshire was brought forward under the Government’s fiscal boost in November 2008.

The group has also agreed two major private initiative schemes this year as well as being part of the Connect consortium in charge of the M25 project.

It sealed a £200 million contract to build schools in Southwark, south London, as well as a £170 million deal to build the Fife General Hospital.

An agreement could also be close on the Carlisle Northern Development Route shortly.

Balfour said: “Performance continues to be in line with expectations, underpinned by continued infrastructure expenditure by our customers, the benefit of acquisitions and our tight control of costs.”
