Corus reopens Wales blast furnace

A blast furnace in Wales that was mothballed a few months ago due to falling demand is to resume functioning, a company spokesperson has said.

Corus, a subsidiary of Tata Steel, said that blast furnace No 4 in Port Talbot, South Wales would be restarted to “take advantage of business opportunities”.

A spokesman for the company said: “Corus is to start preparations to reopen the No 4 Blast Furnace at its Port Talbot works in South Wales.”

The London-based steel company has said that it will restart production at the Llanwern strip mill in Newport as business has picked up.

The spokesman added: “The reopening will give Corus’ UK strip products business greater operational flexibility, improving customer service and shortening lead times.

“It will also help the company take advantage of business opportunities it would like to respond to.”

The company had closed the Wales blast furnace along with two others located in Scunthorpe and Holland.
