An environmentally friendly and sustainable building training facility has opened at Pembrokeshire College in Haverfordwest.
The Construction Technology Centre, which has been officially opened by the Welsh environment minister Jane Davidson, is a result of £3million investment, with £2.5 million coming from the Welsh Assembly Government.
The centre is the first further education development in the UK to achieve an excellent BREEAM rating, with design features including a biomass heating system and solar thermal energy for its hot water supply.
Other sustainable energy features included in its unique design, which was named best building in the Welsh Bespoke BREEAM category last year, is its ability to maximise natural daylight and internal lighting which is movement and daylight adjusted.
Rain water is collected and used to flush toilets throughout the centre and 30% of the materials used in its construction are recycled.
Speaking at the opening Ms Davidson said: “This building represents the next step in education thinking, the realisation of a vision for our environment and our young people.
“In terms of education it will benefit those who want to enter the construction industry, whether they are starting their careers or want to update their skills and knowledge.”
