The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has agreed to fund two college projects in West Lancashire and Manchester, providing modern education facilities.
Plans have been unveiled for a £43 million new campus to be built at Ormskirk and Skelmersdale College in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire.
Councillor Ian Grant, leader of West Lancashire Borough council, said: “This is marvellous news. A new college is important not only for the future education of our Borough’s young people, but also for the town of Skelmersdale itself.”
Meanwhile, a £27.5 million project will see Manchester College revitalising its campus on Brownley Road, Wythenshawe, improving its vocational and sixth form facilities.
The LSC has contributed just over £7 million for the final phase of the college’s redevelopment scheme.
Geoff Russell, chief executive of the LSC, said: “Both projects will provide new, modern education facilities needed in both areas, and both projects will be major investments for their communities.
“Confirmation of these projects completes the first phase of the major review of college capital funding that the LSC has been conducting for almost a year. We have managed the difficult task of investing limited funds for the projects that will meet the highest level of needs, as recommended by Sir Andrew Foster’s review.”
