Laing O’Rourke wins hospital deal

Construction firm Laing O’Rourke has secured a £100 million contract to redevelop the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

The North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust chose the builder from among seven bidders for the project, which it says will boost the local economy and help regenerate West Cumbria.

The new facility will include an emergency care centre, and new wards, theatres and ambulatory care.

Laing O’Rourke will lead the construction and design of the redevelopment with an aim to use low carbon technologies. The company said the workforce will be mostly sourced locally.

The publicly funded capital project is said to be West Cumbria’s biggest single investment in healthcare in more than 50 years.

The trust hopes work on the project will start in November. It estimates a £6 million spend on enabling works this year, with the main construction scheduled to commence in April next year.
