One of the biggest mosques in London - 62,000 square feet, five stories and boasting a 130-foot minaret - has been approved by council planners.
The Harrow Central Mosque on Station Road will open next year and includes a gym, creche and cafe. Permission was granted in 2000, but was suspended pending conditions and revisions.
They include a requirement that the existing mosque in Station Road be converted back into affordable housing, and a contribution of £15,000 be paid for a controlled parking zone.
The mosque must only be used for worship in accordance with the religious calendar before 7.30am or after 10pm.
Said council spokesman Marilyn Ashton: “This is a very significant building on Harrow’s skyline, and while permission was given some while ago, it was important we regularised changes that had been made.
“I’m pleased that we have been able to give formal permission while at the same time balancing that approval with the views of local residents.”
