The 2010 construction deadline for Salford City Reds’ new 20,000-seater stadium is looking increasingly unrealistic, club chairman John Wilkinson has announced.
The project has run into numerous difficulties since plans were first unveiled four years ago, the latest coming from the Reds’ primary partner in the project, Salford City College.
The college has failed to secure funding from the Learning Skills Council for a campus to be built on the site, however, the club revealed that other sources of funding are available to them.
Wilkinson said: “The stadium is not dependent on LSC funding. People have seen the LSC funding go and assumed we cannot build the stadium – not true. If I am very honest with myself I think we shall be playing our rugby there by 2011.”
The new deadline for relocation by 2011 would need to be delivered to coincide with the renewal of Super League licences.
