Skanska to build London hospital

Construction firm Skanska has won a £61 million contract to build a world-class cancer centre in the capital for the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH).

The new facility, which will have a total floor space of 14,800 square meters, will be built on the site of the former Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospital which shifted to the new University College Hospital in November last year.

The design includes an internal courtyard and atrium, with five floors above and two floors below ground floor level.

Under the contract, Skanska will give finishing touches to walls, ceilings and floors. It will also add mechanical and electrical engineering installations and lifts, and refurbish existing underground tunnels.

The Swedish company said it will use a reinforced concrete frame for the building with high quality bronze cladding and curtain wall system.

Skanska said its aim was to construct a sustainable structure while meeting all technical requirements.
