Sunderland council to discuss bridge

Councillors in Sunderland will discuss the construction of a new bridge to aid transport connections in Sunderland this week.

Decisions about moves for the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor (SSTC) project will be made, including filing a planning application for a landmark bridge 180 metres (594ft) above the River Wear.

During the meeting on Wednesday, city council cabinet members will analyse a report on economic benefits, public support, plans for construction, costs for a design and approach roads.

The bridge, which is the main part of this SSTC phase, is planned across the river from Castletown on the north to Pallion on the south.

The costs will be borne by a number of organisations including £23m of the £133m of available funding put in by the council. The Department for Transport will pitch in with the majority of the rest.

Council leader Paul Watson said: “In consultation last year, people in Sunderland said they liked the idea of a landmark design and wanted to keep any impact on council tax bills to a minimum.

“The cabinet agreed that more details on construction, design and maintenance costs should be completed.”
