Work begins on strategic link road

Work on a link road aimed at improving access to Barrow`s £200 million residential and leisure development has begun.

The link road scheme is Phase 2 of the development at Barrow-in-Furness’ Waterfront enhancements project, which hopes to attract investors to the town creating more jobs and boosting the local economy.

The road is just one part of a series of highway enhancements that are essential to improve access between the Waterfront and town centre, ease congestion and help traffic flow.

Work on the A590 North Road and A5087 Hindpool Road will be completed thanks to £3 million of investment from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), £500,000 from Cumbria County Council and a contribution of £100,000 from Barrow Borough Council.

It is hoped the improved infrastructure, which is expected to take six months to complete, will help revitalise business and employment and form part of a vital transport route to the development.

Councillor Tony Markley, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for highways and economic development, said: “This road is going to be a massive boost for businesses and jobs in Barrow and will help attract further investment into the town.

“This is an exciting time for Barrow and the link road has an important role to play in regenerating the town for this and future generations.”
