Offices, bars, cafes and a 100-bed hotel complex are coming to Bradford after councillors gave planning permission to a £40 million construction project on a former cinema site.
New Victoria Place, a project from developer Langtree Artisan and Yorkshire-based architects Careyjones, will include a central square and community space in place of the old Odeon cinema.
Controversial first plans for the glass-fronted development were reduced in size after English Heritage objected, and local people have campaigned to save the distinctive Odeon building from demolition.
Langtree Artisan director Simon Peters said: “This is a landmark decision and the right decision to provide the catalyst for the regeneration of Bradford.
“We’re confident that we can deliver a scheme that local people will ultimately be proud of. The architecture is underpinned by sustainable principles and we’re committed to delivering an inspiring and innovative new scheme that represents Bradford’s future whilst respecting its past.”
Supporters of the development on the corner of Prince’s Way and Thornton Road said it will create more than 1,350 jobs on an integral regeneration site, along with the City Park, the Learning Quarter, Eastbrook Hall and relocation of the Magistrates Court.
