World War I Grade II Listed Airplane Hanger restored to former glory

Project Description

Headley Hall Hangar – Grade II Listed World War One Hangar

University of Leeds

The Project

The replacement of major sections of external and internal timber structural supports which had become badly decayed both above and below ground with some sections missing completely

Our Solutions

Over the years the internal and external supporting timbers had decayed, some partially and some to the point of needing total replacement.  All timbers were given chemical treatment and repair to future protect them.  We then worked both on site and in our joinery workshop to design, manufacture and install the new wood work.  Some timbers required total replacement, others required the very delicate operation of splicing new wood into old sections.  The project also required new steelwork fabrication and the installation of new plinths and guttering to reduce the risk of timber bases sitting in standing water

The Outcome

The conservation works carried out by RDF on this important and rare listed building have ensured its’ protection and structural integrity for years to come

Client Testimonials

“RDF was appointed to undertake structural timber repairs to the former aircraft hangar at Headley Hall Farm.  Over the course of the repair scheme craftsmen from RDF worked diligently and with great skill to repair the timber frame structure and were always on hand to offer practical advice when tackling some unexpected problems that often arise when working on heritage buildings.  They successfully integrated, and at times assisted, other trades employed by the University working on site whilst upholding exemplary Health and Safety standards.  Following the successful completion of the Hangar Repair Scheme I hope to work with RDF again on similar projects.”  Estate Services, University of Leeds
